The middle of the XVIII century saw the development of a new social class and, as a consequence, new districts began to appear in the city of Santander. This economic prosperity also produced a very important increase in the cultural life of the city during the XIX century.
Important figures such as José María de Pereda or Benito Pérez Galdós, wrote about this bourgeois city and its elegant and sophisticated way of life.
